(Houghton, NY) –  Houghton Academy’s Impact CREW hosted a benefit event, “A Night for Change,” on Thursday, April 25, 2019. The event was in support of Journey’s End, a nonprofit organization that provides refugees with resources and support they need to become successful, active, and contributing members of the Western New York community. The benefit took place on the Houghton Academy campus and was attended by faculty, staff, students, community members, and Journey’s End constituents. The fundraiser netted over $1,700 for the organization.

Organized by the Academy’s service club, Impact CREW (Christians Ready, Equipped, & Willing), the night featured a fair trade silent auction of donated cultural items and baked goods, as well as a dinner spotlighting several varieties of soups with a middle eastern flair. The final minutes of the auction were filled with a frenzy of friendly up bidding on items, especially some of the delicious-looking cakes, pies, and cookies.

Following the auction and soup dinner, attendees screened the film “Girl Rising”— a short educational documentary about “nine unforgettable girls, striving beyond circumstance and overcoming nearly insurmountable odds to achieve their dreams.” Attendees were then treated to an international fashion show which featured students, faculty, staff, and community members modeling wardrobes from around the world. The night concluded with a special dance presentation by the Swahili Sisters of Lafayette International School in Buffalo.

“A Night for Change was magical!” commented Kathy Spillman, Director of Specialized Programs at Journey’s End. “Every part of the night fit in perfectly with the mission of Journey’s End to welcome refugees to our state, from the silent auction featuring fair trade items, to the soups from across the world, to the interactive international fashion show.”

“The planning, organization, and hosting of ‘A Night for Change’ embodies the vision we have for all Houghton Academy students to ‘Lead Globally’ and ‘Love Boldly’ for the glory of God,” explains Houghton Academy Head of School, John Nelson. “I’m pleased and encouraged by our students’ desire to put their beliefs into action.”
