You Count. Here’s Why!

Do you remember the shooting at the high school in Parkland, Florida on February 14?

Do you remember March 14 and its massive media coverage of student walkouts in support of gun control? That night NBC news devoted 4 minutes, 3 seconds to the walkouts. CBS spent 2 minutes, 46 seconds. ABC spent 3 minutes, 25 seconds.

Many of the schools had fully supported the protests, asking teachers to be flexible and allowing the use of school equipment.

When a teacher in one school wondered out loud if the same support would be offered by the school for a protest concerning the lives lost, for example, in abortion, she was promptly suspended, although later returned to her classroom.

However, student Brandon Gillespie took up the question. He planned a pro-life demonstration for April 11. He wondered if the school administration would treat such a demonstration the same way as they treated the earlier demonstration. He was disappointed but not surprised that the school did not allow him the same flexibility.

The national pro-life walkout website listed 191 high schools and 81 colleges as participating. Kristin Hawkins, the president of Students for Life of America, said in a statement that “more than 350 students and student leaders” had contacted them about supporting the movement.

So, on the April 11 evening news, after a day of nationwide pro-life student walkouts, what kind of coverage did the media give? Remember, NBC, CBS, and ABC gave a combined total coverage of over 10 minutes for the gun control walkouts.

For the pro-life walkouts, NBC gave no coverage. CBS: none. ABC: none.

The playing field is not level. News media are not necessarily even-handed. The big social-media players (Facebook, YouTube, etc.) are letting their biases show. Therefore, in order to be accurately informed, we all need to get information through a variety of sources.

Thank you for reading this particular alternative source. Happy hunting as you search out additional sources that merit your time and effort!
